What Were Your Favorite Santa Barbara Wines of 2011?

Postby Steve Anderson » Thu Jan 12, 2012 12:16 am

Cheers,

Happy 2012. Got to thinking as I was reading the board earlier...What were your favorite Santa Barbara wines of 2011?

New Discoveries:
Bratcher Chard and Pinot
Liquid Farm Chards (White Hill and Golden Slope)

Pleasant Surprises:
1997 Jaffurs SB County Syrah - still very alive and excellent
2003 Paul Lato Bien Nacido Quo Vadis Syrah

Checked cellar tracker and (yikes!) 201 wines consumed (or donated, brought to tastings, etc) during 2011, of which about a third were from Santa Barbara County. My favorites in no particular order:
Tercero: 2009 Outlier Gewurz, 2008 Cuve Loco and 2008 Thread
Paul Lato: 2009 Le Souvenir Sierra Madre Santa Maria Chard, 2003 Quo Vadis Bien Nacido Syrah, 07 Fiddlestix PN
Dragonette: All three 2009 Sauv Blancs, 2008 Syrah, 08 Fiddlestix PN
Lillian: 2005/2007 Syrahs (Primarily White Hawk Vyd)
Sanguis: 2004 Last Dance Syrah
Tensley: 2007 Colson Canyon Syrah
Palmina: 2010 Malvasia Bianca
Samsara: 2003 Larner Syrah
Jonata: 2004/2005 Sangre
Rey (De Su Propia Cosecha): 2006 Grenache, 2007 Syrah

Cheers,

Steve

Great post bud! Man...so many highlights for me!

Whites:
-agree with you about Dragonette SB's. Had barrel/tank samples of next vintage...just wait.

-Liquid Farm chards...can't wait for the Clos

-speaking of Clos...09 &10 Clos Pepe chards. Stainless is money.

-Andrew Murray RGB...YUM!!

-10 Palmina Malvasia. Top five whites I've ever had

-Larry's Tercero GB and Outlier...the vio is going to pop in bottle real soon. Love it as is though.

-Storm sauv blanc. NZ in SB!

-Jaffurs Vio. Best in valley.

-Any Cold Heaven vio. Great stuff.

Reds:
-Bratcher is a great call...love em.

-Storm 08 Le Bon Climat Pinot. Amazing.

-Presidio fruit...Dragonette, The Mistress (Jaffurs)

-Vino Sapien Kick On Pinot. Matt coming on strong!!

-10 Clos Pepe standard Pinot. Going to be special.

-Tercero Cuvée Loco and The Climb.

-Sine Qua Non "Into the Dark". I did have it last year. ;)

-Ojai Vineyard Pinots and Syrahs...

-Jaffurs...SBC syrah, Verna's, Thompson syrah and petite sirah. The SB standard.

I could think of more...if I do, I'll post more. ;)

Well, shiver me timbers... Santa Maria IS in SB county... however, some of the SQN wines are NOT...because Ventura is it's own place.
Maybe toooo technical? Of course. ;)

Don, wasn't the fruit from Eleven Confessions? That is in Santa Rita Hills if I remember correctly.

Didn't originally include Ojai since the winery is in Ventura County, but.... since the '97 Ojai Henry Daniel is Thompson/Bien Nacido fruit I guess we can include it. What an awesome bottle! I found one more and will look for a special occasion to open it and hope that it is as good as the last.

Cheers!
