if you're up in the wine country, around los olivos, and find you need to eat, there are some nice alternatives now. For a long time, there has been Panino for sandwiches. quite good sandwiches; all under $10. you can have there or take out. I suggest taking out and going to a local winery, buy a glass/bottle of wine and eating there. very civilized. our favs for wine/view/closeness are Brander, which has a courtyard similar to france and is only a mile away; Beckman, which is about the same distance and has gazebo's overlooking a pond; and Buttonwood, straight down Alamo Pintado (south of Los Olivos about a couple miles) which has picnic tables in a lovely garden setting, with an orchard to the side.

recently the fellows--brothers, actually--that ran Brothers restaurant at Matteis tavern moved into the Sides Hardware (previously Sidestreet Cafe) just 40 yards from the flagpole. (practically everything is within 40 yards of the flagpole in some direction. it's a small town) this is a very good restaurant. sandwiches are slightly pricer than Panino.. probably $15.. but worth it. Breakfast was so good it still haunts me and I'm caculating how to justify gettng back there soon.

Bob, thank you for this. ALWAYS seem to go to Panino since I run such a tight schedule when in town. Love their sandwiches.

Just read that Presqu'ile is doing a really cool thing...you can get a Side's lunch when you taste at their tasting room. Totally think that is a great idea!!
